Constipation The Cause of All Ills

Ayurveda is considered one of the oldest forms of treatment. It has been practiced in India for thousands of years. It is only now that the full extent of this knowledge is being realized. Most of the treatise of ancient Indian medicines has been lost in the vagaries of time .A effort is being made to save the remnants of this ancient Indian form of medicine. Numerous Ayurvedic and naturopathic treatment centers are being opened. I had the benefit of visiting Shri Kotakkal Arya Vaidya Shala in the southernmost part of the country. It is not possible for me to discuss all the relevant treatments but I will talk about one of them-Detoxification.

         One of the first procedures which all patients have to follow is fasting and the complete cleaning of the bowels. Many Indian religious practices include mandatory fasting and eating food with high fiber content. I am not interested in the religious sentiments but fasting twice in a year for a week helps to clear the bowels and help in removing the excreta which stick in the various bends in the intestine. It is a well known fact that improper stool habits contribute to the formation f free radicals which can attack the inner lining of the intestines and cause carcinoma. It has been proved that food with high fiber content greatly reduces the chances of cancer and ulcers. The Vaidya or the Ayurveda Doctor of the Arya Vaidya Shala is at pains to explain how faulty stool habits are one of the precipitating factors for various diseases including cancer.
