What is Acute Bronchitis?

Also called: Bronchitis, Bronchitis acute

The trachea divides into smaller passages known as bronchi. When there is pathogenic infection of the Bronchi, it is known as Acute Bronchitis. It lasts for a brief period of time.

Bronchitis is also known as Acute Bronchitis and Bronchitis - acute.

It differs from chronic bronchitis, which lasts for a longer period of time. Acute bronchitis is a common medical condition which is seen by a family doctor. It is caused by virus which infects the respiratory tract. These include: the rhinovirus, which causes the common cold. The risk of getting bronchitis is more if you've had a recent bout of viral respiratory infection which reduces ones ability to ward off infections. You are at risk if you have chronic lung problems such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease cystic fibrosis or asthma. Smoking also increases the risk for bronchitis. The symptoms of bronchitis may mimic those of a cold. The back of your throat may become irritated which leads to dry, irritating cough. As the infection progresses, the cough can produce a thick, yellow mucus which may be streaked with blood. Bronchitis can also be caused by bacterial infection.
