What is Addison's Disease?
Also called: Adrenal Insufficiency, Adrenocortical Hypofunction, Hypocortisolism
Adrenal Insufficiency is also known as Addison's Disease, Hypocortisolism and Adrenocortical Hypofunction.
Adrenal glands are two small structures just above your kidneys. The outer layer of Adrenal glands secretes hormones that help your body to respond during stress or emergency. It also regulates the blood pressure and water/ salt balance. Addison's disease is caused due to a deficiency in the secretion of these hormones. The precipitating factors of Addison’s disease are a haywire immune system which starts attacking the adrenal glands.
The Symptoms include - Weight loss, Muscular weakness, Fatigue, Low blood pressure, patchy or dark skin etc.
Confirmation is usually done by Lab tests. It is fatal if not treated. Patients usually carry an emergency card which specifies what should be done in an emergency.
