Description: Pterocarpus indicus is the scientific name for Amboyna wood, Andaman redwood, Angsana, Burmese rosewood, Malay padauk, Narra, Papua New Guinea rosewood or Philippine mahogany. It is one of the best known trees in Southeast Asia. In the Philippines, it is the national tree and the favorite timber for the manufacture of fine furniture. In Singapore, it is practically the symbol of that country's garden city planting program; many avenues are graced by this attractive species. In Malaysia, it has been planted as a shade tree for at least 200 years. It belongs to the Fabaceae family of the Pterocarpus genus. It is a large, deciduous tree, 30 m or more high. The leaves, root and stem barks of Amboyna wood is known for its Antibacterial activity. In folk remedies Amboyna wood is used for tumors, the plant for cancers, especially of the mouth.
