What is Anorexia?

Also called: Decreased appetite, Lack of Appetite

Hunger or Hunger pangs are felt by the brain. As soon as the glucose levels in our body goes down, the brain signals the body to replenish this reserves. Anorexia or lack of appetite is a condition in which there is decreased sensation of appetite. There can be many causes of anorexia, some trivial whereas some can be very serious.

Anorexia is also known as decreased appetite and lack of appetite.

The most common form of anorexia is the satiation felt after the consumption of food. There can be many factors which can precipitate and incidence of anorexia. This includes "anorexia nervosa, severe depression, cancer, Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, dementia, AIDS, Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome, Acute Radiation Syndrome, and chronic renal failure and the use of certain drugs, particularly stimulants and narcotics such as cocaine and heroin". Lack of appetite can also be caused due to environmental reasons. High altitudes can trigger an acute form of anorexia. Some medications can also cause anorexia. Any illness can affect a previously hearty appetite. If the illness is treatable, the appetite should return when the condition is cured. Loss of appetite can cause unintentional weight loss. Depression in the elderly is a common cause of weight loss that is not explained by other factors.
