What is Appendicitis?

The appendix is a vestigial organ which has become defunct due to prolonged disuse. It is a tube-like organ attached to the colon. It is located in the lower right area of the abdomen. As such appendix has no function in humans. When an outgrowth or mucus blocks the appendix, leading to an increase in pressure in the appendix. This state is known as appendicitis. If not treated in time it can lead to the rupture of the appendix and it constitutes a surgical emergency.

Symptoms

Symptoms may include: "Pain and swelling in the abdomen, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, constipation or diarrhea, inability to pass gas and low fever". Appendicitis constitutes a medical emergency. Treatment almost always involves removing the appendix. Anyone can get appendicitis. It happens most often to people between the ages of 10 and 30.
