Atopic dermatitis is a common skin ailment. The skin or the dermal cells to be precise has a life span and dead cells are continuously shed from the surface of the skin. If the rate of production of the dead cells are increased or hastened, atopic dermatitis results. Atopic dermatitis can occur at any age, but it starts at infancy. Urban population in cities with a dry weather is more likely to get atopic dermatitis. A combination of genetic (hereditary) and environmental factors are thought to precipitate atopic dermatitis.
Symptoms: They vary from person to person. The common symptoms include "dry, itchy skin and rashes on the face, inside the elbows and behind the knees, on the face, and on the hands and feet". Itching is the cardinal symptom of atopic dermatitis. Intense pruritis leads to scratching and rubbing. The symptoms of atopic dermatitis increases during the night. Scratching increases the possibility of secondary fungal and bacterial infections. This type of dermatitis is characterized by the release of exudates.
