Name: Axlewood

Other Names: Anogeissus latifolia

Description: Anogeissus latifolia is the botanical name for Axlewood. It belongs to the Combretaceae family of the genus Anogeissus. It is a species of small to medium-sized tree that is found in deciduous or semi-evergreen forest. It is native to the Southern Asia and found abundantly in countries like India, Nepal, Myanmar and Sri Lanka. Axlewood is believed to be one of the most useful trees in India. Its leaves are used in India for tanning as it contains large amounts of tannin. The tree is the source of Indian gum, also known as ghatti gum, which is used for calico printing among other uses. Ethnobotanically, the bark of Anogeissus latifolia has been reported to be used in the treatment of various disorders including stomach and skin diseases. Moderate antibacterial activity and antifungal activity was also observed. Researches have been done to prove Axlewood’s anti-ulcer and antimicrobial activity.
