Baccharis

Added by Preeti. Last Edited by SuchetaG

Name: Baccharis

Description: Baccharis L. is a genre perennial shrub that belongs to the family of Asteraceae. The genre is named after Bacchus, the Latin god of wine. Baccharis is often referred to as brooms because many members of this plant species have small thin leaves, but they are not at all related to the true brooms. The 250-400 species of this plant occur throughout America. If present, the leaves bear along the stems in alternate fashion. Baccharis L. flowers are usually whitish or pinkish in color. There are no ray flowers, but many disk flowers and pistillate flowers. Several species of this plant are of interest for cultivation purpose, as the dense but flexible stem structure makes a good windbreak. Some other species, principally B. halimifolia, have become weeds in areas such as Australia and Spain.
