What is Bacterial Vaginosis?

Also called: Vaginal Diseases, Vaginal Infection, Vaginitis

Vaginitis or Bacterial Vaginosis or Vaginal Infection or Vaginal Diseases is a Vaginal Infection by bacteria or Candida. The invasion of the vagina by these pathogens causes an inflammation of the vagina. Vaginal Diseases or Vaginal Infection result in a white discharge from the vagina, and induces intense itching and pain. Change in the vaginal pH causes the invasion of pathogens into the vagina causing Vaginitis. Vaginitis can also result from reduced levels of estrogen in the body after menopause.

The common types of Vaginitis are:

Bacterial vaginosis: The causative agent is the bacteria which inhabit the vaginal region and becomes virulent after a change in the vaginal pH.

Yeast infections: The causative pathogen is the Candida albicans.

Trichomoniasis: This type is caused by a parasite and is transmitted by sexual intercourse.

Atrophic Vaginitis: It is caused by reduced estrogen levels after menopause. The vaginal tissues become dry, leading to itching, burning or pain.
