What is Bad Breath?

Also called: Halitosis

Halitosis better known as Bad breath is a very embarrassing ailment. The bad breath which contains an unpleasant odor is formed by the putrefying bacteria which inhabit the oral cavity. This odor can be seen periodically or be persistent, depending on the cause. Bad oral hygiene, not brushing the teeth after food are the primary culprits. The mouth's warmth and moist conditions make it an ideal setting for the growth and multiplication of bacteria. About 80 percent of bad breath or Halitosis is caused by remnants of food in the mouth which are decomposed by the bacteria in the oral cavity leading to foul odor from the mouth.

Bad breath or halitosis is caused by: Poor dental hygiene, infrequent or improper brushing and flossing, infections in the mouth, respiratory-tract infections, dry mouth, systemic illnesses, diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease, lung disease, sinus disease, reflux disease or psychiatric illness.
