Name: Bergenia crassifolia

Description: Bergenia crassifolia has big cabbage-like leaves. The leaves will get a hint of red if they are drought stressed or cold. Then for a bonus Winter Blooming Bergenia blooms when most everything else is still languishing under the effects of winter. It grows best in light shade and can tolerate very little water. The leaves grow to 6" and the flowers to 8-10". It slowly spreads by surface runners. The B. cordifolia and B. crassifolia look very similar, except for the bloom time and a small difference in the leaf. This plant has more ripple with sparsely toothed leaf margin. The pink flower clusters are held more erect and above the foliage in the late winter through the early spring. Best when grown in light shade or cool sun with little to moderate watering. Hardy to <15 degrees F.
