What is Beri Beri?

Also called: Thiamine Deficiency, Vitamin B1 Deficiency

Beri-beri is a deficiency disease caused by the deficiency of vitamin b complex, vitamin b1 deficiency to be precise. Vitamin b1 also known as thiamine and is very vital for various metabolic process of the body. Beri-beri or vitamin b1 deficiency is seen more in south Asian countries where rice is the staple food. Use of polished rice is thought to be the cause of Beri-beri. The pericarp which is a rich source of vitamin b1 is lost when the rice is polished. There are two types of Beri-beri: wet Beri-beri which affects the cardiovascular system and dry Beri-beri and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome which affects the nervous system. Beri- beri is a rare disease in the developed countries since most foods are fortified with vitamins, thus preventing any incidence of vitamin b1 deficiency. Today, beriberi occurs mostly in patients who abuse alcohol, because drinking heavily can lead to bad nutrition and makes it harder for the body to absorb and store thiamine.
Symptoms of dry Beri-beri include "pain, tingling, loss of feeling (sensation) in hands, muscle damage with loss of muscle function or paralysis of the lower legs and feet, vomiting, strange eye movements, mental confusion/ speech difficulties, coma and death".
