Description: Aerva lanata is the botanical name of Bhadram. The other names of Bhadram are Astmabayata, Bhadrika, Cherula and Cherupula. It is a perennial herb that belongs to the Amaranthaceae family of the genus Aerva. This woody, prostrate or succulent herb sometimes flowers in the first year. A. lanata occurs on damper sites and is native to the African and Asian sub-continents. The plant is very useful for various ailments. A leaf-decoction is prepared as a gargle for treating sore-throat and used in various complex treatments against guinea-worm. Bhadram is used to wash babies that have become unconscious during an attack of malaria or of some other disease are washed with a leaf decoction at the same time smoke from the burning plant is inhaled. The leaf-sap is also used for eye-complaints. All parts of plant contains antimicrobial properties, hence is useful against infectious diseases. Research are going on to prove the Diuretic and anti-inflammatory activities of Aerva lanata.
