What is Birth Control Pills?

Birth control pills or oral contraceptive pills or have been used the world over for 40 years now. Birth control pills are very safe and effective and are one of the most extensively studied and researched medications. The first birth control pill was Enovid which was introduced in early sixties. Since then, more than 45 types of oral contraceptives are available for women. Birth control pills have undergone a sea change since their introduction. The dosages of the pills have been significantly reduced. The associated side effects have also significantly reduced. Most Birth control pills contain two hormones- The estrogen and progesterone. Birth control pills are synthetic versions of naturally occurring female hormones. Birth control pills work by preventing ovulation. Birth control pills are 98% to 99% effective for women who take the pills every day as directed. Pill-taking mistakes decrease effectiveness.
