Name: Bitter gourd

Other Names: Momordica charantia, ampalaya, Bitter cucumber, Karela, Balsam apple, Bitter melon, balsam pear

Description: Bitter gourd, Momordica charantia, is an herbaceous vine belonging to the family Cucurbitaceae (same family of melons and cucumbers). It's native to the tropics, although cultivated in many other parts. Bitter gourd is also named as Bitter melon, ampalaya, Bitter cucumber, Karela (Hindi), Balsam apple, Momordica charantia and Balsam pear.

The vine grows to 5 m. It has simple, alternate leaves with deeply separated lobes. Each plant bears separate yellow male and female flowers. The fruit has a warty looking exterior and it's oblong like a cucumber.

Popular as food and for natural remedies in many Asian countries.

Bitter gourd has demonstrated antibacterial and antiviral activity. It has very broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties and has been used against diseases caused by Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas, Salmonella, Streptobacillus, Helicobacter pylori (bacteria responsible for many cases of gastritis), Streptococcus, etc.
