Do not confuse Black Cohosh with blue cohosh, a very different herbal supplement. Black Cohosh also known as Cimicifuga racemosa, Black bugbane or Black snakeroot or Fairy candle or Actaea racemosa is a member of the family Ranunculaceae, native to eastern North America from the extreme south of Ontario south to central Georgia, and west to Missouri and Arkansas. It is also known by some of its common names such as Rhizoma Cimicifugae, Bugbane Rhizome, Black Cohosh Rhizome, Cimicifuge, Bugwort, Bugbane and Sheng Ma.
Black Cohosh has been used in connection with menopause, dysmenorrhea, osteoporosis, premenstrual syndrome and also to induce labor. Black Cohosh has a history of use for rheumatism (arthritis and muscle pain) but has been used more recently to treat hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and other symptoms that can occur during menopause. It was thought that black cohosh contained estrogen-like chemicals, but recent research suggests that it works by binding to serotonin receptors. Native Americans used Black Cohosh to treat gynecological disorders and other disorders as well, including sore throats, kidney problems, and even depression. Do not take black cohosh without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or suffering from breast cancer.
