What is Bone Fracture?

Bones provides protection and gives structure and shape to the body. When any bone is cracked or broken then it is known as Bone Fracture. The continuity of the bone is broken. The most common reason which causes bone Fracture is trauma. Bone fracture can also happen in conditions like osteoporosis where the bone has become weak and brittle. Certain types of cancer or osteogenesis imperfecta can also precipitate a Bone fracture. Bone fractures are classified as closed or open and simple or multi-fragmentary fractures.

Closed fractures are defined as those bone fractures in which the skin is intact, while open fractures involve wounds that communicate with the fracture and carry the risk of infections. Open fractures require antibiotic therapy and urgent surgical treatment. It involves removal of dirt, contamination and dead tissues,

Simple fractures are Bone Fractures that occur along one line, splitting the bone into two pieces. Multi-fragmentary fractures involve the bone splitting into a number of pieces. Simple Bone Fractures are much easier to treat and heal much faster.

Another type of Bone Fractures is a compression fracture, e.g. when the front portion of a vertebra in the spine collapses due to osteoporosis, a medical condition which causes bones to become brittle and susceptible to fracture.
