Name: Broccoli

Other Names: Italian Broccoli, calabrese, brocks

Description: Other names of Broccoli are- Italian Broccoli, calabrese and brocks. The binomial name of broccoli is Brassica oleracea. Broccoli is a Super Food. Broccoli is a plant of the Cabbage family, Brassicaceae (earlier Cruciferae). Broccoli is classified as the Italica Cultivar Group of the species Brassica oleracea. . Broccoli most closely resembles cauliflower, which is actually just a different cultivar group of the same species, but broccoli is green rather than white. New research suggests that broccoli is especially good for the stomach. It is high in vitamin C and soluble fiber and contains the multiple nutrients with potent anti-cancer properties including diindolylmethane and selenium. The 3, 3’-Diindolylmethane found in Broccoli is a potent modulator of the innate immune response system with anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-cancer activity. Broccoli also contains the compound glucoraphanin, which can be processed into an anticancer compound sulforaphane, though the benefits of broccoli is reduced if the vegetable is boiled. A high intake of broccoli has been found to reduce the risk of aggressive prostate cancer.

A compound found in Broccoli and broccoli sprouts appears to be more effective than modern antibiotics against the bacteria which causes peptic ulcers. Moreover, tests in mice show that the compound offers tremendous protection against stomach cancer - the second most common form of cancer in the world.

A different study showed that consumption of broccoli was strongly associated with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease death in postmenopausal women.

It should be noted that Broccoli sprouts have shown to be every bit as beneficial as full grown brocoli. Broccoli leaf is also edible and actually contains more betacarotene than the florets.
