What is Chafing?

Also called: Skin irritation from rubbing

Chafing or Skin irritation from rubbing is a general term used for the irritation of the skin by repeated rubbing on any rough surface including skin or clothes. The inner thigh, armpits, nipples, groin areas etc. are the usual sites of chaffing. Obese and athletes are particularly affected by Chafing. The common symptoms associated with Chafing include stinging and burning sensations. The affected site looks fiery red due to inflammation. Sweating makes the symptoms worse. The key to prevent chafing is to prevent excess accumulation of sweat and friction between body parts. Use of synthetic fibers should be avoided and cotton fabrics which absorb moisture should be preferred. Drink plenty of fluids to keep the body hydrated. Talcum powder containing deodorant and anti-septic components should be applied on sweaty regions of the body like the armpits and buttocks. Suitable lubricants like petroleum jelly can be applied on body parts to reduce friction while walking or running.
