Description: Chicken Pox is a highly virulent and contagious illness caused by the infection of Varicella virus. The disease is characterized by the appearance of small sores on the chest and the head along with fever and headache. There is intense itching and pruritis. Scratching the sores can lead to secondary pathogenic infections. The incubation period of Chicken Pox or Varicella is 10 to 21 days. The disease is spread through the air when the patient wheezes and sneezes. Tiny aerosolized droplets of secretions from the naso-pharynx are spread in the air and when a healthy person comes in contact with these droplets they also get infected by the Varicella virus. After the primary infection, life long immunity is achieved. The disease is not fatal, though the symptoms are more severe in the adults. Pregnant or immune compromised patients are more likely to face complications. Shingles is the most common complication of Chicken Pox when the dormant Varicella virus is reactivated.
