Name: Chicory

Other Names: Common chicory, Cichorium intybus

Description: Chicory or Common chicory or Cichorium intybus is the dry root powder of Chicory roots. Chicory powder is mixed with coffee to impart a stronger aroma and flavor to the coffee. Chicory is a rich source of vitamin A and is very beneficial in eye disorders like myopia and hypermetropia. About 75 grams of chicory powder is boiled with 500 ml of water .The beverage is strained and taken twice daily. The defects of vision are resolved in about 2 months.

Chicory especially the flower was used as a treatment in Germany, and is recorded in many books as an ancient German treatment for everyday ailments. It is variously used as a tonic and appetite stimulant, and as a treatment for gallstones, gastro-enteritis, sinus problems and cuts and bruises.
