Description: Cladonia belong to the moss-like lichens genus and are related to the family of Cladoniaceae. They include those species commonly known as cup lichen, reindeer moss, and British soldiers. Cladonia are the chief food source for reindeer and caribou. Cladonia has very high value for the people living in the areas where it grows. Like for example, the species is of high economic importance to reindeer herders, such as the Sami in Scandinavia and the Nenets in Russia. There are many medicinal benefits of Cladonia. Antibiotic compounds are extracted from some species of Cladonia to create antibiotic cream. The light green species Cladonia stellaris is used in flower decorations. They are easy to grow and several Cladonia species grow on sand dunes. The presence, and luxuriant carpet like growth, of Cladonia species is one of the defining characters of grey dune. Many researches are being done to find its antimicrobial activity and the other medical benefits that can be derived from this species of moss.
