Name: Cloudberry

Other Names: Rubus chamaemorus, Bakeapple

Description: Rubus chamaemorus is the scientific name for Bakeapple or the more popular name Cloudberry. It is a wild plant that is harvested for its fruit. Cloudberry belongs to the Rosaceae family of the genus Rubus. Cloudberry is low creeping herbaceous shrub with stalks that can grow up to a height of 7.6-25 cm. The stems are unbranched, hairless, with 1-3 leaves at the top. The leaves of this shrub are alternate, roundish to kidney-shaped. The leaves feel leathery on touch. The flowers are single, white in color, on a creeping root like stem, or rhizome, that appear in the month of June and July. Cloudberry is the name of both the plant and the fruit. The fruit are yellow or amber-coloured, rasberry-like berry grows from the flower, quickly dropping from the stalk, ripening in late August and September. Cloudberry is used for many home remedies. The root has been used in the treatment of coughs, fevers and consumption. A decoction of the root and lower stem has been used by barren women to try and become pregnant.
