Comfrey is native to Europe and Asia. The word comfrey, derived from the Latin word for "grow together", reflects the early uses of this plant. Greeks and Romans used comfrey to stop heavy bleeding, treat bronchial problems, and heal wounds and broken bones. Poultices were made for external wounds and tea was consumed for internal ailments. The roots and leaves of Comfrey are used. Comfrey is an important herb in organic gardening, having many medicinal and fertilizer uses. Contemporary herbalists view Comfrey as an ambivalent and controversial herb that may offer therapeutic benefits but at the potential risk of liver toxicity.
