Corneal ulcer:
The transparent area at the front of the eyeball is known as cornea. When the outer layer of the cornea is eroded or a sore is formed a corneal ulcer occurs. The common causes of corneal ulcer are infections by pathogens which include bacteria, viruses, parasite or fungus.
Causes:
The most common causes of corneal ulcer are - infection with bacteria, viruses, fungi or protozoan. Other causes include abrasions or trauma by foreign bodies, inadequate eyelid closure, dry eyes, allergic eye disease and other inflammatory disorders, Contact lens wear, viral keratitis etc. Fungal keratitis can occur in persons who are on immunosuppressant drugs or trauma by plant materials.
Symptoms:
The symptoms of Corneal ulcer include "impaired vision, eye pain, Eye redness, White patch on the cornea, photophobia, watery eyes, eye burning, itching and discharge etc".
