Description: Croup or Laryngotracheobronchitis or Croup Syndrome refers to a disease which involves the upper respiratory tract. Croup is characterized by cough which seems like the bark of a dog. Most Croups are caused by viruses. These include Para-influenza virus, adenovirus, respiratory syncytial virus, influenza, and measles. Viral Croup occurs in children of the age group of 3 months to 5 years. Croup is seen usually in the winter and early spring. Symptoms are more severe in kids below 3 years. The characteristic bark like cough associated with Laryngotracheobronchitis or Croup Syndrome is due to the inflammation of the vocal chords. When the air passes through the swollen vocal chords it causes the chords to vibrate with a barking sound. Croup is not serious and can be treated at home.
