Folium Isatidis

Properties: Bitter and salty in flavour, cold in nature, it acts on the heart, lung and stomach channels. The bitter and cold properties clear away heat and the salty enters and acts in the blood division. The herb can clear away the noxious heat and excessive fire in the blood division and is especially good at removing blood-heat and ecchymoses. It is therefore indicated for thesyndromes of the invasion of ying and blood division by heat, intense heat in both Qi and blood division, maculas caused by virulent pathogen heat, swollen throat and canker sores in the mouth.

Effects: Clearing away heat, detoxicating, removing blood heat and ecchymoses.

Indications:

1. For the syndromes of heat invasion of ying and blood division and intense heat in both qi and blood division, manifested as high fever and delirium, masculas and eruptions, hematemesis and epistasis, it is used in combination with the blood-cooling and detoxicating drugs, as rhinoceros horn and capejasmine fruit.

2. For swollen and sore throat, canker sores in the mouth, skin and external diseases caused by excessive fire and noxious heat dormant in the body, it is used in combination with the heat-clearing and detoxicating drugs, such as scrophularia root, coptis root, dandelion herb, etc.

In addition, in clinical practice this herb was used in recent years to cure viral diseases, as influenza, measles, and hepatitis.

Dosage and Administration: 10-15g.

Modern Researches: Clerodendron cytophyllum is bactericidal to Shinella dysenteriae,Neisseria meningitides, and is capable of killing Leptospira.polygonum tinctorium possesses the functions of inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, enhancing the phagocytosis of leukocytes, decreasing the skin vascular permeability and can act as antiarthritic and antipyretic agents. Isatis tinctoria and Baphicacanthus cusia have certain antibacertial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and hemolytic streptococci. This herb can inhibit hepatitis surface antigen and Asian A influenza virus. In short, the herb possesses antibacterial, antiviral, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory and immunity enhancing effects
