What is Darkening of Skin?

The color of skin is due to the concentration of melanin pigment in the skin. Darkening of the skin can take place due to hyper pigmentation or an excess of melanin in the skin. The common causes of dark skin are- Heredity; if the parents are dark skinned the offspring will also have dark skin. Excessive exposure to the sunlight can also cause dark skin. It is the natural course for the skin to produce more melanin on exposure to sunlight to protect the skin from the harmful UV radiations. Medications can also lead to photo sensitivity and darkening of the skin.
