What is Eczema?

Also called: Flaky Skin, Dermatitis

The integumentary system is the largest system in the body covering more surface area than any other organ. The skin is made up of three layers and dead cells are continually produced and are removed from the surface of the skin. The process of birth maturation and death of the dermal cells take place at a particular rate. If this rate is altered, a state known as Eczema or Dermatitis is seen. The disease is characterized by "redness, skin edema (swelling), itching and dryness, crusting, flaking, blistering, cracking, oozing, or bleeding". It is not dangerous, but most types cause red, swollen and itchy skin. Factors that can cause eczema include "Other diseases, irritating substances, allergies and your genetic makeup". Eczema is not contagious. The most common type of eczema is Atopic dermatitis. It is an allergic condition that makes your skin dry and itchy. It is most common in babies and children. Treatment is done by application of topical corticosteroids, or immunosuppressant drugs. Treatments are limited to control of symptoms and Eczema has a tendency to relapse after the treatment is discontinued.
