Also called: Nose Bleed, Bleeding from the nose
Epistaxis or Nose Bleed means bleeding from the nose. The inner lining of the nasal passage is highly vascularised. The nasal passage is always moist. This makes the inhaled air moist and also removes any dust or suspended matter. Whenever the nasal passage becomes dry, the capillaries in the nasal passage rupture and Epistaxis occurs. Other causes of Nose Bleed include minor irritations or colds. Injuries to the nose can also cause bleeding. They can be frightening for some patients, but is rarely life threatening. Most Nose Bleed stop after some time. The head should be kept raised to minimize the bleeding time. Application of moisturizers inside the nose will prevent the nasal passage from becoming dry and prevent incidence of Epistaxis or Nose Bleed.
