Added by ziya. Last Edited by Merrin

Name: Ethiopian pepper

Other Names: Xylopia aethiopica, Guinea pepper plant

Description: Ethiopian pepper is a tropical evergreen tree naïve to the Western Africa. The tree bears pungent aromatic seeds that are used in folk medicine as a condiment. This evergreen tree grows up to 20m in height. As mentioned earlier it is local to the lowland rainforest and moist fringe forests in the savanna zones of Africa. The dried fruits of Ethiopian pepper (Grains of Selim) are used as a spice and a traditional medicine. Ethiopian pepper is also known as Xylopia aethiopica and Guinea pepper plant. Xylopia in Greek means "bitter wood", aethiopica refers to the origin of the tree, though currently most of it grows in Ghana. The wood of Ethiopian pepperis quite flexible and has some local use in west-central Africa for masts, boat paddles, and rudders. It has been described as termite-proof and, accordingly, is used for house posts and beams. The dried black fruits of this species are called guinea peppers and were once of commercial importance in Europe as a tangy condiment and drug.
