The family name of Gardenia is Rubiaceae and botanical name is Gardeniae Jasminoidis. Gardenia is also known as Cape Jasmine Fruit, Gardeniae Fructus or gardenia fruit.It is bitter and cold. It is a native of Northern India and Persia. The fruit is used in herbal medicines and also in traditional Chinese medicines and is known as Zhi Zi in China. Gardenia is used to flavor beverages, frozen dairy desserts, candy, baked goods, gelatins, and puddings and jasmine is used to add fragrance to creams, lotions, and perfumes. Its medicinal action is to reduce fire and ease the mind, to eliminate damp-heat, and to remove heat from blood and counteract toxicity. It is used in indication such as febrile diseases with restlessness; jaundice with dark urine; hematuria with difficult painful urination; hemoptysis and epistaxis caused by heat in the blood; inflammation of the eye; boils and sores and external use for sprains and bruises. And also Gardenia has been used for pepatitis, hepatic pain due to cirrhosis, and abdominal pain due to dysentery. Many Jasminum species have been used as a sedative, aphrodisiac, or in cancer treatment.
