What is Gastric Cancer?

Also called: Cancer of the Stomach, Stomach Cancer

The stomach is the first organ in the digestive system. It is a J shaped hollow muscular organ and it is primarily concerned with the changing of the food into a semisolid form. The walls of stomach release gastric juice which contains a fair amount of HCl. The mucous layer of the stomach protects the lining of the stomach from the corrosive action of HCl. Stomach Cancer or Gastric Cancer mostly affects the geriatric patients though incidence of Gastric Cancer are increasing in the younger generation due to faulty life styles and eating habits. The common causative factors of Stomach Cancer are "Helicobacter pylori infection, have had stomach inflammation, salted, smoked, or pickled foods, smoking, or have a family history of stomach cancer". It is hard to effectively diagnose Stomach Cancer in its early states. Indigestion and stomach discomfort can be symptoms of early cancer, but other problems can cause the same symptoms. In advanced cases, there may be blood in your stool, vomiting, unexplained weight loss, jaundice or trouble swallowing. Because it is often found late, it can be hard to treat Stomach Cancer. Treatment options include "surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or a combination".
