What is Gastritis?

The stomach is a j shaped organ where the food is stored for some time, before they are sent to its onward journey. The pH of the contents in the stomach is highly acidic. The layer of mucus in the stomach prevents the acidic content of the stomach from corroding the walls of the stomach. Gastritis is defined as the inflammation of the lining of the stomach. Gastritis can be caused by a number of reasons which include "Infection with the same bacterium that causes most stomach ulcers, traumatic injury and regular use of certain pain relievers". Gastritis may occur suddenly (acute gastritis), or it can occur slowly over time (chronic gastritis). In spite of the many conditions associated with Gastritis, the signs and symptoms of the disease are very similar: a burning pain in your upper abdomen and, occasionally, bloating, belching, nausea or vomiting.
