The Thyroid is an endocrine gland situated in the neck, just above the collar bone. The thyroid gland is an important organ in maintaining the metabolism of the body. A large population of U.S. has thyroid diseases. Goiter is caused when there is a deficiency of iodine in the diet. The thyroid gland swells to increase efficiency of iodine absorption. Goiter symptoms may include "Enlargement of your thyroid gland, resulting in swelling of your neck, a tight feeling in your throat, coughing, difficulty swallowing, and difficulty in breathing". There are many causes for both conditions. Treatment involves trying to reset your body's metabolism to a normal rate.
