Name: Goldenrod

Other Names: Solidago sp, Aaron's rod, European goldenrod, Solidago virgaurea

Description: Goldenrod scientifically called as Solidago sp. or Solidago virgaurea. The goldenrod is a yellow flowering plant in the Family Asteraceae. It is also called as European goldenrod or Aaron's rod. Goldenrod has several anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, and is an excellent diuretic. The variety Solidago virgaurea is a traditional kidney tonic. It has aquaretic and antispasmodic action as well and seems to increase kidney output. This makes it useful as an agent to counter inflammation and irritation of the kidneys when bacterial infection or stones are present. The aquaretic action is also useful in helping to dissolve kidney stones by diluting their components and prevent them from reoccurring.

It can be used in conjunction with echinacea for the treatment of nephritis and cystitis. Use it for upper respiratory infections when there is an overabundance of mucus and postnasal drip.

Goldenrod contains bioflavonoids, which strengthen the veins and is therefore indicated for varicose veins and fragile capillaries. It is also a carminative, and will ease colic and flatulence. Because of its antifungal properties, it can be used as a douche. Goldenrod is generally prepared as an infusion.
