Gumbo limbo, Bursera simaruba, belongs to the family Burseraceae. It is native to tropical America.
It is a tree that could reach up to 30 m tall. Compound leaves (pinnate), alternate.
People call the gumbo limbo the "tourist tree" because the tree's bark is usually reddish and peeling (as the skin of tourists with a sunburn). The bark has an oily look and peels off in sheets, revealing a greenish-brown layer underneath.
This plant has a very important ecological role: its fruits are a good source of food for many resident and migrant birds. It adapts well to various kinds of soils and habitats, which make them ideal for reforestation, living fences and wind protection.
The resin, fruits and leaves have many medicinal uses including anti-inflammatory and anti-anemic properties.
