What is Hay Fever?

Also called: Allergy, Hypersensitivity

Allergy is defined as an unwanted hyperactivity by the immune system to a perfectly harmless substance which enters the body. Persons having allergies are often sensitive to more than one thing. These substances could be: "pollen, dust mites, mold spores, insect stings, pet dander, food, and medicines. Both genes and the environment have something to do with allergies. Normally the immune system fights harmful germs. During allergic reactions, the immune system becomes haywire and reacts to a perfectly innocuous substance. Symptoms of allergies include a runny nose, asthma, rashes, sneezing, swelling or itching. Symptoms can vary greatly from person to person. Although allergies can be unpleasant it is rarely fatal. A severe reaction is known as anaphylaxis and it can be life-threatening.

The other name of allergy is hypersensitivity and hay fever.
