Hematemesis or Haematemesis or Vomiting blood is defined as the emesis of blood, is one of the symptom of a serious GI tract disorder. Hematemesis is caused by the regurgitation of blood through the upper GI tract. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish coughing up blood from the lungs or bloody post-nasal drainage. A forceful vomiting can cause a tear in the delicate lining of the throat leading to streaks of blood in the vomit. Other causes of Vomiting blood include "Bleeding ulcer located in the stomach, duodenum, or esophagus, bleeding esophageal varices, defects in the blood vessels of the G-I tract, esophagitis, gastritis, gastroenteritis, irritation or erosion of the lining of the esophagus or stomach, swallowing blood, tumors of the stomach or esophagus".
