What is Hemifacial Spasm?

Also called: HFS

Hemifacial Spasm or HFS is a neurological malady characterized by recurrent involuntary contractions of the muscles on one side of the face. It can affect both the sexes and is usually seen in subjects above the age of 45. The eye muscles are first affected, followed by other muscles of the face. Ultimately all the muscles of the face are affected causing twitching and the mouth is pulled to one side. The condition may be caused by a facial nerve injury or a tumor, or it may have no apparent cause. Very commonly, Hemifacial Spasm or HFS is caused by a blood vessel pressing on the facial nerve.
