It gets its name from the Holm, an old-fashioned name for holly. It has different names in different region; like in Spain it is called Encina, in Portugal it’s known as Azinheira and in France as Chêne vert or Yeuse. The Holm Oak is a member of the white oak section of the genre. The acorns or nuts mature in a single summer. It is a medium range tree about 20–27 m tall with a fine square crack blackish bark and leathery evergreen leaves. Generally the old leaves fall every 1–2years after the new leaves emerge. The upper side of the leaves is dark green in color and pale whitish-grey with dense small hairs underneath. The shape of its leaves is variable, like the adult leaves on the upper branches are some where between 4–8 cm long and 1–3 cm broad, while those on the lower branches of young trees are often larger and can extend to 10 cm long, and are saw-like and spiny. This feature is presumed to be for its safeguard from grazing animals. The plant resembles the common European Holly Ilex aquifolium, and this similarity has led to its common botanical names. The name ilex is originally originated from the classical Latin name for the Holm Oak. It was later used as a botanical genre name for the hollies. The flowers are catkins, and are produced in the spring; the fruit is an acorn or nut, which full-grown in about 6 months.
