Description: I personally hate the taste of prunes. Nor do I like the texture. There's just something about prunes that really, really bothers me. I've tried, but it is not possible for me to simply eat a few prunes or drink a glass of prune juice.
BUT, I also realize that prunes are a great way to naturally relieve your constipation. So, I had to find a way to get past the disgusting taste of prunes, in order to get the benefits from them and help get past my constipation.
This is my little recipe for making a prune smoothie. I've been drinking these for years now. This is the only way I can get prunes in me. It doesn't taste as great as something you will get from Smoothie-King, but it's definitely a better taste than eating prunes by themselves.
Get a blender and drop in some prunes. You can also slice up a plum or two and put that in there, but I prefer the convenience of prunes. Also add two banana's, because foods high in potassium seem to help the elimination process. I also like to add a few strawberries, raspberries or blueberries, because they help the smoothie taste better, and also provide many important anti-oxidants.
Now you need a liquid to help blend it all together. I've found that adding just water doesn't seem to help the taste. I personally like to add Aloe Vera Juice, as well as cranberry juice. Pretty much any kind of juice will help the taste... but I personally don't like to add any citrus flavors, such as orange juice. Of course, if you add prune juice, that will help relieve your constipation, but only contribute to the prune juice taste. Adding prune juice is the best option, if you don't mind the taste.
I also like to add a few ice-cubes to make it colder. This is an important factor for me.
I also like to add Flaxseed oil because it contains alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential fatty acid that helps with many inflammatory bowel disease's. I've also always heard that it's a good source for Omega-3's and will help prevent constipation in the future. (Hemp Oil is also a good edition.)
You can also add some sugar to help sweeten the smoothie. I like to add some raw honey or agave nectar. Those seem to help sweeten it. I would stay away from artificial sweeteners, but that's another personal preference.
Another option that may be beneficial to you, is to add a dietary fiber supplement that are found at your local grocery stores and pharmacy's. Insoluble fiber is an essential part to relieving constipation. You should really try to eat as much fiber as you can, on a daily basis.
Directions For Use: Blend ingredients until you reach your desired texture. Serve chilled. Drink at your own leisure.
Not To Use With: I drink it whenever I need too and never experienced a problem. But I supposed it's possible this prune-smoothie could interfere with prescriptions you may be taking. Just to play it safe, it may be wise to call your doctor... But, that's up to you.
Side Effects: I've never really experienced any side effects, maybe a little bloating or gas.
Expected Results: You should expect to have a bowel movement within a few hours of drinking the prune-smoothie.
Expected Results Within: 6 hours

that's an interesting recipe for prune smoothies. I've never thought about putting prunes in a smoothie before, but I bet that works pretty well for constipation.
