Added by Shristi. Last Edited by Shristi

Name: Japanese Honeysuckle

Other Names: Hall's honeysuckle, madreselva, Lonicera japonica

Description: Japanese honeysuckle/ Lonicera japonica/ madreselva Hall's honeysuckle is a honeysuckle plant. This species is native to eastern Asia that includes Japan, Korea, northern and eastern China, and Taiwan. But this plant has the ability to thrive and spread aggressively outside its natural range. It’s a major invasive species in North America. The Japanese Honeysuckle is a twining vine that is able to scale up to 10m high and reportedly even more in trees. It has opposite, simple oval leaves that may range from 3–8 cm long and 2–3 cm broad. The flowers of this plant are sweet scented and are double-tongued, opening white and fading to yellow. The fruit has a globose dark blue color and these berries can be 5–8 mm in diameter containing numerous seeds. In the traditional Chinese medicine Japanese Honeysuckle flower is called ren dong teng and as a high medicinal value. Japanese Honeysuckle has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and is used to dispel heat and remove toxins, including carbuncles, fevers, influenza and ulcers. It is, however, of cold or yin nature, and is not recommended for anyone with a weak and "cold" digestive system. The dried leaves are also used in traditional Chinese medicine.
