Lard

Added by leo. Last Edited by leo

Name: Lard

Other Names: Pig Fat

Description: Lard is another name for pig fat. Lard is popular in many countries (except Muslim ones) and its main culinary applications are for spreading and cooking. Lard is high fat and additionally it has a heavy odor and because of this its use in modern cooking is significantly decreasing. In addition to cooking, lard is frequently used to manufacture soap.

Lard can be obtained from various parts of the pig. The most common places for obtaining lard are from the "flare" (the fat deposit surrounding the kidneys), the loins and the fatback, even from the fat around the digestive organs. Usually the lard one can buy from the supermarket has different additives, so if you want to get something authentic, contacting a farmer is a better choice.
