What is Liver Enlargement?

Also called: Hepatosplenomegaly, Enlarged liver, Splenomegaly

Hepatomegaly is a condition characterized by the swelling of the liver. It could be caused by many factors which include "Infections, excessive consumption of alcohol, amoebiasis, hepatic tumors, toxic effects of medicines, or metabolic disorders". It may or may not cause jaundice. If both the liver and spleen are affected then this condition is known as hepato-splenomegaly. Diagnosis is usually carried out by palpation or percussion below the lower edge of the ribs. In its normal state, the edge of the liver is thin and firm and it cannot be felt with the finger tips below the edge of the ribs. It may be considered enlarged if a doctor can feel it in this area. Causes of Hepatomegaly include "Alcohol use, Congestive heart failure, Glycogen storage disease, Hemolytic-uraemic syndrome (HUS), Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Hepatocellular carcinoma, Hereditary fructose intolerance, Infectious mononucleosis, Leukemia, Neuroblastoma, Niemann-Pick disease, Primary biliary cirrhosis, Reye syndrome, Sarcoidosis, Sclerosing cholangitis, Steatosis (fat in the liver from metabolic problems such as diabetes, Obesity, and high triglycerides) and Tumor metastases".
