Name: Luffah

Other Names: Luffa acutangula, angled luffa, silk gourd, luffa, loofah, Ridged Gourd

Description: The Luffa acutangula is commonly known as Ridged Gourd, luffa, loofah, loofah, angled luffa, Luffah and silk gourd. Luffa species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including Hypercompe albicornis. A Luffa or Loofah sponge is used like a body scrub. The fruit is used to make many delicacies. Luffah is also recommended for the treatment of Digestive disorders like piles. This vegetable can be found in varying sizes. It is distinguishable by 10 equidistant ridges which run from stem to tip. They must be removed with a vegetable peeler, but in tender young gourds the rest of the green skin is left on and is edible. Sweet and mild in flavour, it is a favourite vegetable in most Asian countries, being used in mild coconut milk curries or stir-fried with meat or other vegetables. A close relative of the smooth loofah (Luffa cylindrica), variously known as the sponge gourd, vegetable sponge and towel gourd ever since its usefulness as a bathtime scrubber (loofah) was discovered. The ridged gourd, being more difficult to strip of skin and flesh than its smooth cousin, does not have commercial value as a loofah, in spite of a very similar internal structure. As far as table use goes, the ridged gourd has the subtler flavour.
