What is Mellitus?

Also called: Diabetes, Diabetes Mellitus, Insulin dependent diabetes

The pancreas performs the role of a digestive organ as well as an endocrine gland. The pancreas secretes a hormone 'insulin' which helps in the utilization of glucose by the cells. Insulin is vital component in maintaining the sugar levels in the body. If the pancreas stops making insulin the glucose levels in the blood will increase. This condition is known as Diabetes Mellitus. During the course of time, increased glucose levels in the blood can have serious repercussions on the working of many vital organs like the heart, kidneys, liver, nerves and the eyes. Insulin-dependent diabetes is seen more in children and the young. Symptoms of Diabetes may include "Excessive thirst ,frequent urination, feeling very hungry or tired, loss of weight, late healing of wounds, dry and itchy skin, loss of sensation or tingling feeling in the foot and impaired vision". Diabetes can be confirmed by a blood test.
