Name: New Guinea walnut

Other Names: Dracontomelon dao, Pacific walnut, Papua New Guinea walnut, Argus pheasant tree

Description: Dracontomelon dao is the scientific name for New Guinea walnut, Pacific walnut, Papua New Guinea walnut and Argus pheasant tree. New Guinea walnut is known for it Antibacterial and antifungal activities. There have been studies to prove this traditional medicinal claim. The studies demonstrated a very good level of broad spectrum antibacterial activity. New Guinea walnut is a genus of flowering plants in the family Anacardiaceae. The most commonly eaten species is Dracontomelon duperreanum, which produces an edible fruit that is eaten in Cambodia and Vietnam. It is a large tree up to 45(-55) m tall, bole branchless for up to 20(-25) m, up to 100(-150) cm in diameter, with narrow buttresses up to 6 m high, bark surface irregularly scaly, greyish-brown with brown or greenish patches, inner bark pink or red. Leaves arranged spirally, crowded towards the ends of twigs. It occurs in primary or secondary, evergreen or semi-deciduous (monsoon) forest, and is native to Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands, Thailand. The Medicinal benefits of New Guinea walnut for which this tree is used are numerous. Like the bark is used against dysentery, leaves and flowers are also employed in traditional medicine. Other uses are its timber which is used commercially for veneers and in the manufacture of fine furniture.
