It is native to tropical America but nowadays is cultivated in many countries with a tropical climate and it's known worldwide. The Papaya shrub has spirally arranged palmately lobed leaves that are clustered in top of the trunk. Papaya flowers/fruits appear on the axils of the leaves. The fruit is large, up to 45 cm long. When it's ripe, it is soft, usually orange and has many black seeds. The plant and the unripe fruits have latex (a whitish sap) which contains the enzyme papain. Papaya has many uses: the fruits are edible. The papain enzyme tenderizes animal muscles; it has carminative, digestive, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, astringent and antiseptic properties.
